Our Story

The Rich History of Gras Hunting Farm

Gras Hunting Farm Timeline
1904

Carl Woermann

The story of Jagdfarm Gras begins in 1904, when Carl Woermann, a prominent shipowner from Hamburg and, at the time, the world's largest private shipper, purchased the farm from the Damara & Namaqua Company. Located 230 km south of Windhoek near Kalkrand, the farm stretches along 28 km of the Fish River. In the early years, a stately farmhouse and several outbuildings were constructed along its banks.

1907

Adolph Woermann

In 1907, Carl's son, Adolph Woermann, took over the property, which then covered 41,085 hectares. The farm primarily focused on sheep farming, supplemented by cattle, horses, and crop cultivation. These early years posed significant challenges: construction materials had to be imported from Germany and food supplies (fruits, vegetables, grains) were bought in Windhoek, as the land first had to be made arable. The 230 km journey to and from Windhoek was made by ox wagon, taking up to four weeks for a round trip.

1907–1999

Years of Challenge

Until the end of World War I, the Woermann shipping company regularly provided financial support to keep the farm running. However, persistent droughts, livestock diseases, and the difficult terrain often led to setbacks. After the war, the company could no longer offer assistance, forcing the family to rely on bank loans. The years 1921–22 were marked by devastating droughts. Crops failed, and livestock perished. In 1923, relentless rains caused the Fish River to flood, sweeping away buildings, machinery, animals, and the harvest. This was followed by a locust plague that consumed every green thing. These hardships ultimately forced Adolph Woermann to sell the farm and return to Hamburg. Over the next 75 years, the farm passed through the hands of seven different owners and even served as a school at one point.

1999

Restoration

In 1999, Jannie and Anri Spangenberg (Namibians of the third generation) acquired the farm. With care and respect for its history, they lovingly restored and modernized the property, creating a warm and welcoming place for guests to enjoy.

2022

Preservation

In 2022, the Colloredo-Mansfeld family joined as partners to help preserve and develop this unique heritage site for future generations.

Hunting

Hunting Experience

Experience hunting as it should be, ethical, sustainable, and connected to nature’s rhythms.

Fair Chase Hunting

The terrain is flat to gently rolling with rocky sections, offering excellent conditions for a rewarding stalk. Among others, Oryx, Springbok, and Warthog can be hunted. On request, we also offer population control hunting.

All hunts are conducted under the guidance of an experienced Professional Hunter (PH) and a skilled tracker.

We will obtain all the necessary hunting licenses for you. Each license not only allows the export of trophies from Namibia but also their import into your home country. All game hunted in Namibia with a license can also be imported into your home country in accordance with the regulations of the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

We offer you the hunting method of your choice – whether it’s an exciting stalk, a relaxed sit in a sturdy high seat at scenic waterholes, or a hunt from a well-equipped hunting vehicle.

For those who enjoy variety, there is also the opportunity to fish in the Fish River during your stay.

We are proud members of the Namibian Professional Hunting Association (NAPHA) and strictly adhere to ethical hunting principles.

Clothing Reccomendations

Choose sturdy, lightweight clothing in natural or muted colors to blend in with the surroundings.
In June and July, bring a warm jacket for the cooler mornings and evenings.
Wear breathable, ankle-high boots to ensure comfort and provide protection against snake bites.
A wide-brimmed hat or cap is essential for sun protection. So is a good sunscreen.
Sunglasses are recommended to protect your eyes from glare.
Don’t forget insect repellent to guard against mosquitoes and other insects.

Hunting Season

Namibia’s hunting season runs from February 1 to November 30. The best time to visit is during the dry season from April to October, offering ideal visibility due to sparse vegetation.

In the warmer months hunting is done in the early morning and late afternoon; the hot midday hours are usually spent relaxing at the lodge. During the colder winter months, we prefer to spend the day in the field due to shorter daylight hours.
